Financial Derivatives

Background

Focusing on financial derivatives used by small and medium-sized businesses, in 2007, we announced the launch of our Treasury function.

The team is led by partner Andrew Wells, formerly Head of Derivatives at UK law giant, Eversheds. The derivatives discipline adds a significant dimension to any provincial practice and in our case draws on Wells’ significant in-house trading floor background and understanding of finance-linked hedging arrangements.

Andrew has identified a largely unmet need for well-priced, clear and authoritative reviews of hedge derivative documentation (often interest rate and currency swaps) on behalf of small-medium enterprises required to take up these products by high street lending banks. He notes that there is a paucity of derivatives advice in this context and such advice as is available is either priced expensively or stems from relatively uninitiated high street practices.

He comments: “It is rare to find a law firm outside of the City with full-on derivatives capability. Wells Legal has that talent. It is my aim to reach small to medium-sized operations with highly affordable, clear, derivatives and hedging documentation advice. This is true innovation in a provincial team and suggests we are a viable and valuable alternative to the London practices.
